Norway Farewell Transatlantic 2001
Day 16
Le Havre, France - September 17, 2001

Sign of sympathy
Comforting words from an old ally.

While others linger in lines to debark, I continue my documentation, wondering what I will have missed when finally I leave the ship.

The critic has embarked: an aesthetic low point on any big cruise ship is its casino, almost always dated and tawdry within a few years. Here Norway is not spared, with a fake skylight, a pastiche of Sgt. Pepper by way of Tiffany, and an unconscious (if disadvantageous) evocation of the aesthetic of Paris and other CGT greats.

Norway stern
Inaccessible, enchanting: the aesthetic of le France lingers indomitable as a crew-only area on Norway.

A loving nation bids her adieu, for approximately 48 hours.

I went below to rally Lisa, down hard with a cold, for the very last dinner.

I had been too busy enjoying the meals to bother much with snapshots,
but then realized how fond I was of my tablemates.
